PREVIEW: Beyond Standards Trio @Cooper’s Corner

By Dominic Guanzon

In what was probably the least-4/20 spot a jazz musician could imagine, the Beyond Standards Trio played a gig at Cooper’s Corner in Winfield on Thursday to a crowd warmer than the bar’s yellow lighting. It was a distracted crowd pre-occupied with The Game, fried calamari orders, and a birthday party in the carpeted area. And yet, still eager to applaud every song.

The trio – comprised of Trevor Hill (ts), Glen O’Fallon (b), and Diego Rodriguez (d) – paid tribute to the late Wayne Shorter with several of his standards, but they also showcased some of Hill’s original compositions. All while the bar patrons jeered at the Cubs-Dodgers game.

Highlights of the night include an elderly couple taking the floor to “Misty”, a request of “Happy Birthday” that turned into “St. Thomas”, and everyone perking up after recognizing “Caravan”. Also, the fried calamari.

Trevor’s latest album “Pangaea Ultima” is available on Bandcamp.
