Alejandro Salazar’s Nebulus continues to be a tight, audience-friendly fusion trio (as opposed to a quartet, thanks to Will Mallard triple-dipping on a stack of keys/synths and trumpet). They haven’t released a recording yet, but Nebulus’ bassist Micah Collier [MY-ka] has released “Live at Dorian’s, Vol. 1” this year with his Proximity trio.

Isaiah Keith’s GARM is one of the Hammond organist’s many projects, and with so many groups, it makes sense that he’s so plain-spoken. Deadpan even. With so much music output, I wouldn’t have much left to say with my words. But maybe that’s just a stage persona. Regardless, it’s great jazz, especially paired with Rufus Parenti’s tenor and soprano saxophones. Keith’s setlist included a variety of covers and standards to contrast with Nebulus’ originals and fusion-based jams. My personal favorite their take on Chick Corea’s “Spain,” if anything just to hear the iconic intro on organ. Later, Will Mallard and Kavi Naidu joined on trumpet and flute, respectively.
