Another protester directly screamed into the faces of the Illinois State Police troopers, “you’re helping the fascists! You’re directly helping them!”
The Special Response Teams are intended to be DHS’ special weapons and tactics (SWAT) teams, conducting high-risk raids and serving high-risk warrants targeting alleged criminals. On Friday, they faced off against college kids with poster boards, Christian pastors, and abuelas trying to deliver medication to detainees.
“This staging facility was not designed to house detainees for even a night, yet there have been reported and confirmed cases of individuals held in the facility for more than a week,” said Nadiah Alyafai of the Arab American Action Network.
“The fight - it is in the [Chicago City] Council, it is in the courts, but it’s in the streets. It is in our neighborhoods to make sure that we don’t allow these cowards to come and terrorize us.”
