“Frequently, the oppression…against LGBTQ people is used as an excuse for American imperial adventures,” said Andy Thayer of the Gay Liberation Network. “And make no mistake, gays are oppressed in Iran, as they are around the world. But the last thing this country should be doing to support LGBTQ people is bombing them.”
Protesters chanted against ICE and CPD, with one protester performing “traditional Spanish folk dance” on the line.
“We actually had this protest planned before everything that went down in L.A…National Guard should never, ever, ever be called on people that are just protesting for a just and sane society,” said Flores.
“Where is justice? We were promised justice, but we have not received what we were promised.” Clements finished his remarks with a call to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021, which passed the US House, but died in the Senate.
“Our great and esteemed president,” he paused and sighed, looking to the ceiling, “I can’t even say his name, it's so wonderful,” he admitted, to an outburst of laughter from both sides of the room.
“These parents who are scared and worried, they should know that no matter what, we’re going to stand up with them and show up...When trans kids are under attack, what do we do? Stand up, fight back. Or we stand in the back and watch a school board meeting.”
"Ignorance is longer an excuse. Fear is no longer an excuse. 'I didn't know' is no longer an option."
According to one woman: “I like Jan Schakowsky, and I like the work that she’s done, particularly the work of her staff…but, I would also like her to be able to retire and have younger, more representative voices.”
"Thanks to all American supporters. Without them, we will probably be defeated in three days...but as we got help, we really appreciate that," a young, local chant leader told me. "When the conference [between Trump and Zelenskyy] happened...we couldn't stand aside. We will stand for our rights."
“The fight - it is in the [Chicago City] Council, it is in the courts, but it’s in the streets. It is in our neighborhoods to make sure that we don’t allow these cowards to come and terrorize us.”
